CRESSON, PA – The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team earned a key in-conference victory on Wednesday, January 8, as they hosted the visiting Alfred State Pioneers (3-9, 2-1 AMCC).
The Mounties faced an early deficit, falling behind 9-0. This prompted a quick timeout to allow the team to regroup, sparking a dominant 38-13 run, pushing the Mounties into halftime with a 38-22 lead. The team's success was largely driven by aggressive play, drawing fouls, and capitalizing on free throw opportunities; the Mounties earned 23 free throw attempts, converting 21 of them.
After the break, the Mounties continued their strong play, maintaining their momentum throughout the second half. Maintaining a double-digit separation for the rest of the contest, the hosts would go on to secure a 72-54 win.
Rebounding and defense were key components in the Mounties' performance. The hosts would outrebound the Pioneers 36-29 while forcing 22 turnovers, compared to just 16 turnovers committed by the Mounties. This defensive pressure helped shut down the Pioneers' offensive efforts and allowed Mount Aloysius to control the momentum of the game.
Freshman guard
Masie Reed (Shamokin, Pa., Our Lady of Lourdes) posted a standout performance in the contest, scoring a career-high 15 points while adding 3 steals on the defensive side of the ball. Sophomore
Molly Kosmack (Homer City, Pa., Homer-Center) also had a strong performance, contributing 14 points and 8 rebounds to the team's success on the boards.
The Mountie women's basketball team will return to action on Saturday, January 11, as they travel to Pittsburgh to face the Carlow Celtics.
