ERIE, Pa. - Men's soccer opened up strong on Saturday afternoon, but couldn't maintain the momentum in a 3-1 setback against Penn State Behrend in AMCC play to fall to 7-4 (1-1) on the season.
The Mounties (7-4-0, 1-1-0 AMCC) wasted no time asserting themselves offensively. Freshman Pelayo Martin (Ciudad Real, Spain, IES Santa María de Alarcos) netted his first career goal in the 12th minute, slotting home a clean finish off an assist from Junior Tanner Polcyn (Watsontown, Pa., Warrior Run). The early strike gave Mount Aloysius a 1-0 lead and set the tone for a competitive first half.
The Mounties continued to push forward, earning three corner kicks and generating quality looks on goal, but Behrend found an equalizer late in the half. A second goal just before the break shifted momentum heading into halftime.
Despite the deficit, the Mounties continued to battle in the second half. They created several opportunities, outpacing the hosts in corner kicks (10-7) and finishing the match with nine total shots, including four on target. The attacking effort was led by consistent buildup play from the midfield and wide areas.
Defensively, Mount Aloysius held Behrend to just five shots in the second half, with keeper Aidan Dumm making three saves in goal. The Mounties also showed their physicality, staying aggressive throughout a chippy match that featured multiple cautions on both sides.
The Mounties return to the pitch looking to bounce back on Wednesday at nearby Penn State Altoona 1-8 (0-2 AMCC). Kickoff is expected for 7 PM.
