WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius men's volleyball team suffered a loss to Wilkes College (7-12, 0-2 CVC) before defeating Bard College (8-9, 0-0 NEVC) on Saturday, Feb 22. Senior
Andrew Wlodarczyk (East Aurora, N.Y., East Aurora) would lead the Mounties with 29 kills on the day.
Game 1 (Wilkes)
The Mounties would open with a competitive first set against the Colonel, with early errors from Wilkes opening up an 8-1 lead for the visitors. The Colonels would immediately hit back, winning seven of the next eight points to bring the set within one. Back-and-forth action would land the first tied at 19-19, and a combination of Mountie errors and Wilkes service errors would put the Mounties down a set, 23-25.
The second set would see the Mounties struggle against growing Colonel momentum. Although the visitors would prevent Wilkes from putting together substantial runs, the hosts would chip away at the Mounties throughout the set, eventually putting together a trio of late kills bolstered by Mountie errors to claim the set 25-17.
Down two sets, the Mounties would again face early issues, falling in to a 3-8 hole. Down 17-22 late in the set, the Mounties would show final signs of life, pulling the score within two, but a final service error would end the match, with the Mounties falling 21-25 in the third.
Game 2 (Bard)
Despite a slow start, the Mounties would find some momentum in the first set against the Raptors, putting together a six-point run to take a healthy lead. Maintaining the separation through the set, a final attack error from Bard would give the Mounties the first 25-21.
The second set would be one of traded runs. Bard would open the set with a six-point streak, only to be immediately answered by a six-point run from the Mounties. Both teams would continue capturing short runs throughout the set, answering each other with high-energy play, until 20-20, when Bard would put together a final four point swing. The Mounties looked to again answer, but a last kill would end the second against the Mounties, 21-25.
The third and fourth sets would each show impressive clutch play from the Mounties. Even with the Raptors in both sets as the programs enter the final five points, the Mounties would put together two impressive displays, executing down the stretch to claim the third and the fourth 25-22 and 25-21 respectively.
