CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius men's volleyball program suffered a 1-3 defeat to the Penn State Altoona Lions (10-7, 1-0 AMCC) this Sunday, Mar 2. Seniors
Matthew Franz (Johnstown, Ohio, Bishop Hartley) and
Andrew Wlodarczyk (East Aurora, N.Y., East Aurora) each picked up 13 kills across the four sets of action.
The Mounties would come out of the gate hot against the Lions, jumping to a 14-7 first set lead behind strong attacks and Lion errors. However, a shaky stretch from the Mountie front line would put the Lions back in the game, with the visitors winning 9 of 11 points to even the score at 16-all. Back and forth until the final points, the Mounties would give up five straight points on attacking errors, dropping the first set to the Lions 21-25.
The second set would start as an inverted reflection of the first, with the Lions putting together a 12-4 run, only for the Mounties to answer with a six point run of their own. However, consistent pressure from Altoona would break against the hosts, and the visitors would claim the second set 25-20.
Down 2 sets to none, the Mounties would put together an even set with the Lions, as each team traded two-to-three point runs. Up 21-20, the Mounties would put together clutch offense when they needed it, scoring the four points needed on four straight kills to take the set 25-22.
Fired up from the fourth set success, the Mounties would look to build on the momentum, taking a slight lead at 14-12 halfway through the set. The Lions would respond strongly to the Mountie energy, putting together a two five point runs late to take the fourth, and the match, 25-17.
The Mounties fall to 3-10 this season and 0-3 in AMCC play with Sunday's loss. The men return to action this Thursday, Mar 6, against Wilson College. Wilson enters the contest 6-10 this season, coming off a 3-1 win over Valley Forge.
