LATROBE, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team traveled to Saint Vincent, on Wednesday, for a non-conference matchup with the Bearcats. Despite falling behind in both contests, the Mounties (5-3) held the hosts to just four runs across 14 innings of play to earn two victories.
In Game One, the Mounties fell behind 2-0 in the third inning, courtesy of two throwing errors. However, they responded with two runs of their own, in the top of the fourth.Â
Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa./ Leechburg) doubled home the first run, which also chased the Saint Vincent starting pitcher after just three-plus innings of work, cutting the lead in half. McDermott would come around to score on two consecutive fielder's choice plays, withÂ
Trent Dickson (Reinholds, Pa. / Cocalico) earning the RBI, knotting the game at two.
Mount Aloysius took the lead in the fifth inning, whenÂ
Sidric Grove (Clearville, Pa. / Everett) reached on an error and would eventually get pushed around to score. He crossed on a sacrifice fly by
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, Md. / St. Mary's), putting the Mounties ahead, 3-2. Mountie starter,
Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md. /Â Chopticon), faced ten batters to get the final nine outs, with just one hitter reaching base on an error, securing the Mountie victory.
Game Two scoring started with Saint Vincent adding a run in the first. The run scored on a passed ball, while also being unearned from an earlier Mountie miscue. However, the Mounties flipped the lead in their favor in the second inning, on a two-RBI single by Dickson, which occured with two outs. Saint Vincent would tie the game at two, in the bottom of the fourth inning, on a double to left field.
With the game tied at two and heading to the seventh inning, Dickson sparked the Mountie offense with a leadoff double before stealing third base.Â
Ryan Bushey (Latrobe, Pa. / Derry) would drive him in with a single, giving the Mounties a 3-2 lead. They would continued to load the bases with nobody out, and Bushey ultimately scoring on a wild pitch, pushing the score to 4-2.Â
Payton Warner (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Trinity) delivered the final insurance run for the Mounties, with a pinch-hit, sacrifice fly, putting the Mounties ahead 5-2.
Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa. / Harmony)Â tossed four solid innings as the Game Two starter, even though he ended up with a no-decision.Â
Scott Ranallo (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) andÂ
Joey DeRubeis (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) came out of the bullpen with three scoreless frames, earning the win and save, respectively. Overall, Mount Aloysius gave up just one earned run.
The Mounties will now prepare for their Spring Trip to Myrtle Beach. They will open up the trip, on Saturday, with a matchup against McDaniel. Mount Aloysius is scheduled to play five games in seven days, including doubleheaders against SUNY Old Westbury and Plymouth State.
