Perfect Start for Baseball in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team has got off to a flawless start on the field, opening their spring trip with a 3-0 record. They have fought some weather and still managed to produce results on the field.

The Mounties opened the week with a 6-4 victory over McDaniel, on Saturday. Four different Mounties delivered two hits in the contest, while Tyler Weber (Hollsopple, Pa. / Conemaugh Twp) drove in three of the Mounties' six runs. Mount Aloysius used five pitchers in the contest, with Alex Borges (Pittsburgh, Pa. / La Plata) earning the victory and Joey DeRubeis (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) picking up his third save of the season.

Sunday's action was postponed against SUNY Old Westbury, which added a game on Monday to the Mounties' schedule.

In their first game on Monday, against Colby-Sawyer, they got off to a slow start and battled a rain delay. However, the Mounties offense was too much for the Chargers to handle. Mount Aloysius headed into the rain delay with a lead, then produced 11 runs after the stoppage, including eight runs in the eighth inning to induce the ten-run rule. Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, Md. / St. Mary's) produced a 4-for-4 day, including two home runs in the eighth inning, on his way to driving in five runs. Griffin Tunison (Luthvle Timon, Md. / Dulaney) also went 4-for-4 and scored three times, in the victory. Logan Quade (Mechanicsville, Md. / Chopticon) earned the first win of his career, on the mound, tossing 4.1 innings in relief.

Monday's nightcap was against Sunday's original opponent, Old Westbury. The Mounties jumped ahead early with a two-run homer from Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg), and they never looked back. They built a 7-0 lead behind quality pitching from , before finishing the game with an 8-2 score. Bailey went 7.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs and improving his record to 1-1.

The Mounties continue their southern trip with a doubleheader against Plymouth State, on Tuesday, before meeting the Panthers against for a single game on Wednesday.
