GROTTOES, Va. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team traveled south to Mary Baldwin University in Virginia, for a three-game series over the weekend. They return home with their first, second, and third wins of the season, as they swept the series against the Squirrels.
Mount Aloysius started off the weekend strong, with a 5-1 victory in Game One. They were led by
Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md. /Â Chopticon), who made his impact both as a hitter and pitcher. He tossed six strong innings on the mound, allowing just one unearned run to cross the plate, while striking out nine. Quade also scored twice from the leadoff spot, which included a solo homerun in the fifth inning.
In Game Two, the Mounties had to make a comeback in a low-scoring game to get the victory. Mary Baldwin scored a run in each of the first and fourth innings, to take a 2-0 lead. Mount Aloysius got another quality start from , as he allowed just those two runs in six innings on the bump. The strong start allowed the Mountie offense to produce one run in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning, to take a 3-2 lead.
Alex Borges (Pittsburgh, Pa. / La Plata),
Ryan Bushey (Latrobe, Pa. / Derry), and
Griffin Tunison (Luthvle Timon, Md. / Dulaney), all produced RBIs, to put the Mounties ahead.
Joey DeRubeis (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona)Â earned his first save of the season, as he shut the door in the seventh inning to secure the victory for the Mounties.
Mount Aloysius got off to a strong start in Sunday's series finale, scoring five runs over the first two frames, with RBI doubles from Bushey, Quade, and
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, Md. / St. Mary's). The Squirrels scored two runs to cut the lead to 5-2, but that was as close as they would get. The Mounties outscored the home team 6-2 from there, for an 11-4 victory.
Tyler Weber (Hollsopple, Pa. / Conemaugh Twp) made his presence felt in the lineup, as he went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Mount Aloysius used five different pitchers to keep the Squirrels off-balance, leading to the victory.
The Mounties will look to extend their winning streak, on Wednesday, when they travel back to Virginia to face Shenandoah. The Hornets have won four straight games against the Mounties. However, Shenandoah is currently 7-4 on the season and have lost their last two games.
