Baseball Stung by Hornets

CRESSON, Pa. -- On Tuesday, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team traveled to Virginia to take on Shenandoah. The Hornets (8-4) came into the game receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll. Mount Aloysius fell behind early and were unable to recover, despite plating seven runs in the contest.

Shenandoah scored in each of the first five innings, with four or more runs crossing the plate in the first three frames. Ryan Bushey (Latrobe, Pa. / Derry) delivered a two-RBI single in the second inning, but the Mounties were ultimately behind 15-2 heading into the fourth.

The Mounties added a run in the fourth inning, on an RBI double by Alex Borges (Pittsburgh, Pa. / La Plata). They then added four runs in the fifth inning, to help cut down the deficit. In the fifth, Jeremy Eck (Myerstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County) delivered an RBI double, right before Trent Dickson (Reinholds, Pa. / Cocalico) hit his first collegiate homer, driving in three runs. Shenandoah scored a run in each of the frames to answer the Mounties, driving the final score to 17-7.

Dickson had a career day for Mount Aloysius, as he reached based in all three plate appearances, including the three-run homer. He would end up scoring all three times, ultimately scoring three times and driving in three.

Both teams used six different pitchers in the high-scoring affair, with nobody tossing more than 2.0 innings.

Mount Aloysius will now take a week break before returning to the diamond, when they travel to Saint Vincent for a doubleheader with the Bearcats. The matchup will be the final meeting before the Mounties head to Myrtle Beach for their spring break trip. Saint Vincent is currently 3-1 on the season, halfway through their spring trip to Florida. Next Wednesday's matchup will be their first game of the year outside of Florida.
