Baseball Walks Off on La Roche; Sweeps Doubleheader

CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team hosted the first of two conference doubleheaders in two days, on Thursday, when they hosted La Roche. The Mounties (21-7, 4-2 AMCC) picked up crucial victories in both ends of the matchup, including a walk-off win in Game Two.

In Game One, the Mounties got a strong pitching performance out of Troy Misiura (Coalport, Pa. / Glendale) and some timely hitting, as they never trailed in the contest. Jeremy Eck (Myerstown, Pa., Eastern Lebanon County) singled in the first inning to drive in two runs, giving the Mounties an early lead. After La Roche knotted the score, Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg) drove in two runs in the third inning. Eck then scored on a throwing error and extended the Mountie lead to 5-2.

Ryan Bushey (Latrobe, Pa. / Derry) and Griffin Tunison (Luthvle Timon, Md. / Dulaney) each delivered RBIs in the final three Mountie at-bats, pushing the Mountie lead to 7-3. Misiura tossed a complete game for Mount Aloysius, allowing just one earned run and scattering six hits. The freshman improved to 3-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.91.

Game Two saw a much different path for Mount Aloysius. After a scoreless first inning, La Roche scored once in the second then five times in the third, grabbing a 6-0 lead. The Mounties responded with three runs in the third inning, courtesy of a Bushey RBI single and an Eck triple that drove in two.

La Roche added two more runs in the fourth inning, extending their lead to 8-3. Mount Aloysius evened up the score in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sidric Grove (Clearville, Pa. / Everett) reached on an infield single, which drove in a run, making the score 8-4. Bushey then added an RBI double to make it 8-5. Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, Md. / St. Mary's) capped off the scoring with a three-run homerun, tying the game at eight. It was his seventh homer of the season, which leads the team.

The Redhawks pushed one more run across in the fifth to grab a 9-8 lead before both sides went silent. The sixth, seventh, and eighth innings saw just two hits for the Mounties, while La Roche went down in order all three times.

In the ninth inning, the Redhawks pushed an insurance run across in the top-half, making the score 10-8. Mount Aloysius put their first two batters on with walks, before Eck hit into a fielder's choice. On the throw, the Redhawks threw the ball away, allowing a run to score and the Mounties to have the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. McDermott hit a sacrifice fly to center, pushing the tying run across, with just one out and a runner at third base. Mount Aloysius would load the bases, with one out, before making an out on the base paths. With two outs and the winning run at third base, Grove burnt the centerfielder with a fly ball to the fence and drove in the winning run, giving the Mounties an 11-10 victory.

Jacob Smith (Leechburg, Pa. / Kiski Area) earned the victory in Game Two, improving to 2-1. He tossed 5.1 strong innings of relief, allowing just three hits and striking out five batters.

Mount Aloysius will have a quick turnaround, as they are set to host Hilbert, on Friday. The Hawks are 2-4 in AMCC play, but they are coming off of a sweep of Chatham, this past weekend. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
