JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team returned to AMCC play, on Wednesday, as they hosted Pitt-Greensburg. Due to Cresson weather, the doubleheader was moved to Sargent's Stadium at the Point, in Johnstown. The Mounties (19-7, 2-2 AMCC) dropped Game One of the day before winning Game Two, ultimately splitting with Pitt-Greensburg (9-13, 4-2 AMCC).
Game One started with Pitt-Greensburg scoring early and plating a run in the first inning. The Mounties evened the game up in the second inning, with some two-out magic.Â
Sidric Grove (Clearville, Pa. / Everett) doubled off the wall in left field, then scored on aÂ
Griffin Tunison (Luthvle Timon, Md. / Dulaney) RBI single to tie the game.
Unfortunately for the Mounties, they were limited to just two more hits over the final five innings and failed to score. On the flip side, the Bobcats added two runs in the fifth inning and three more runs in the sixth, grabbing a 6-1 victory. Bobcat starter, Conner Burkey, improved to 5-0 on the season with the complete game.
Pitt-Greensburg struck first in Game Two, pushing across three unearned runs in the second inning, all coming with two outs. The crooked number put the Mounties behind 3-0 early.
However, Mountie starter,
Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa. / Harmony), settled in following the second inning and was followed by 3.1 scoreless frames from
Jacob Smith (Leechburg, Pa. /Â Kiski Area). The strong pitching performance allowed the Mountie offense to work on the comeback.
The Mounties scored twice in the third inning to cut into the Bobcat lead.Â
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, Md. / St. Mary's) drove in the first run on a fielder's choice. Cook would later score, with two outs, on an RBI single by
Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa. /Â Leechburg), making the score 3-2.
Mount Aloysius took the lead in the sixth inning, with some help from the Bobcats. They scored the first run without tallying a hit, withÂ
Cole Harkness (Hughesville, Md. / Saint Mary's Ryken) walking, then advancing to third on two separate wild pitches, and finally scoring on a balk. Tunison scored the second Mountie run of the frame, after also walking and advancing on the balk. He ultimately scored on a sacrifice bunt by Cook, giving the Mounties a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Mounties looked to add insurance runs. Grove singled on a bunt to start the inning, then scored on a Harkness triple off the wall. Harkness would score on a passed ball during the next at-bat, giving the Mounties a 6-3 lead. Restarting with nobody on and nobody out, the Mounties scored two more runs without tallying a hit, extending their lead to 8-4.
Smith finished off the ninth inning, sealing the victory for the Mounties and earning his first career victory, improving to 1-1 on the season. The appearance was his fifth of the season, but ultimately his strongest, as he allowed just two hits in 3.1 innings. It was his first, scoreless, multi-inning, appearance.
Mount Aloysius improved to 2-2 in AMCC play, before they once again jump out of conference play, on Friday. They will travel to Chambersburg, to take on Wilson in a doubleheader. The Phoenix are 6-17 on the season after picking up a win against Penn State Berks, on Wednesday.
