Comeback Attempt Falls Short in AMCC Tournament Opener

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team opened the 2025 AMCC Tournament, on Wednesday, against the fourth-seed Hilbert Hawks. The Mounties came from behind to tie the game in the ninth inning, but ultimately fell in the bottom of the tenth inning, 9-8.

Mount Aloysius struggled through the first few innings, falling behind 7-0 and tallying just one hit over their first five at-bats. In the sixth inning, they started to see some life. While only picking up two hits in the frame, the Mounties were assisted by three walks and scored four runs. The big hit for the Mounties came on a two-RBI single by Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg), contributing to the offensive output.

Hilbert responded with one run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Mounties countered with another run in the seventh. Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, Md. / St. Mary's) and Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md. / Chopticon) each singled with two outs, with Quade's single driving in the run, making the score 8-5.

A 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Mounties to cut the score to 8-6, thanks to a solo homerun by Jeremy Eck (Myerstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County). The homer was his fourth of the season, high over the left field fence.

Another inning saw the Hawks go down in order and let the Mounties continue their momentum against the Hilbert closer. While Mount Aloysius saw their first two batters reach on walks, but waited to strike with two outs remaining. A wild pitch set the Mounties up with two runners in scoring position, which allowed Sidric Grove (Clearville, Pa. / Everett) to drive both runs home with a single to right field, tying the game and forcing extra innings.

Mount Aloysius went down in order in the top of the tenth, then saw Hilbert deliver a two-out single down the third base line that drove home the winning run. The final score was 9-8.

Grove led the Mounties with a 2-for-4 performance, driving home three runs. Hayden Mallin (Glenshaw, Pa. / Saint Joseph) also produced a quality relief appearance, hurling 4.0 innings and allowing just one run, keeping the Mounties in the game.

Mount Aloysius is still alive in the tournament, but will move to the elimination side of the bracket. They will face the loser of Thursday's first game between number-two seed, Alfred State, and number-six seed, Pitt-Bradford. First pitch for the game is set for 4:00 pm.
