Montclair, N.J. — The Mount Aloysius women's volleyball team opened its 2025 season with a split in a tri-match on Saturday, sweeping Smith College before falling to host Montclair State in a hard-fought battle.
Game One: Mount Aloysius 3, Smith 0
The Mounties started their season on a strong note, defeating Smith College in straight sets, 25-15, 25-22, 28-26.
Mount Aloysius controlled the opening set with an efficient attack and steady defense, pulling away late to secure a 25-15 win. The Bears pushed back in the second, but the Mounties held their ground behind clutch kills from
Molly Richards to take it 25-22. The third set was the closest of the match, with both teams trading points until the Mounties closed the frame 28-26 to finish the sweep.
The shining stars for the Mounties,
Molly Richards (Naples, Fla., Naples) led the way with 12 kills, while
Poliana Lazarini (Marialva, Pr, Brazil / Garrido) added two service aces to keep Smith on its heels. At the net,
Mackenzie Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) contributed two blocks. Setter
Reghyn Wilson (Harrisburg, Pa., Bishop McDevitt) directed the offense with 19 assists, and
Madison Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) collected 21 digs to anchor the defensive end for the Mounties to open their season.
Game Two: Montclair State 3, Mount Aloysius 0
In their second game of the day, the Mounties would battle host Montclair State in three tightly contested sets, ultimately falling 25-23, 27-25, 25-15.
The first two sets were back-and-forth throughout, with the Mounties nearly stealing momentum late in both frames. Despite the strong push, Montclair State managed to edge out the Mounties by just two points in each of the first two sets before closing the match with a 25-15 win in the third.
The Mounties would see strong showings from the team in back-to-back games. Richards once again led the attack with 11 kills and two serve aces.
Kaylee Smith (Altoona, Pa., Altoona) added two blocks at the net, Wilson finished with 14 assists, and
Madison Barr chipped in with 14 digs on the back line.
