Washington, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team picked up a convincing road victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Washington & Jefferson 4-1 at Alexandre Stadium. The win moves the Mounties to 6-2 on the season.
Mount wasted little time setting the tone, striking all four goals in the first half. Junior Tanner Polcyn (Watsontown, Pa., Warrior Run) opened the scoring in the eighth minute with his second goal in as many games, finishing a pass from Senior Martin Donner (Stockholm, Sweden, Danderyds Gymnasium Studievagl) to give the Mounties the early edge. Just 10 minutes later, Mount Aloysius doubled its lead on an own goal to make it 2-0.
The Mounties continued to press and extended their advantage in the 39th minute when Senior Gonzalo Terricabris (Catalonia, Spain, Garbi Pere Verges) netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season. With less than a minute before halftime, Senior Nico Matusiak (Baltimore, Md., Calvert Hall) added his second career goal off a feed from Freshman Leo Lindberg (Östersund, Sweden, Odensalaskolan), sending Mount Aloysius into the break with a commanding 4-0 lead.
Washington & Jefferson was able to get one past keeper Sam Denchfield (Truro, England, Loughborough College) in the 62nd minute when Jimmy Gogol scored his third goal of the year, but the Mounties' defense held strong the rest of the way to secure the 4-1 win.
The Presidents finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots, including an 11-4 edge in the second half, but Mount Aloysius goalkeeper play and a disciplined back line limited their chances. After the match, head coach Matt Davis credited his team's aggressiveness in the first half. "I was pleased with their aggressive play in the final third, their movement off the ball, and their ability to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities".Â
With the victory, the Mounties improve to 6-2 overall, while Washington & Jefferson drops to 4-2-1. Mount Aloysius will return to action next Saturday when they open conference play against the Hilbert Hawks. The men's game will follow the women's match (1 PM start) at Kelly Field. Kickoff will be at approximately 3:30 PM.Â
