Beaver Falls, Pa. - On Tuesday, men's volleyball headed just north of Pittsburgh for a match-up with the Geneva Golden Tornadoes. The Mounties fell in straight sets to Geneva, dropping a 3-0 decision at Metheny Fieldhouse in Beaver Falls, Pa.
Set 1:
Geneva came out strong to open the match, using an efficient attack to build an early cushion. The Golden Tornadoes hit .409 in the opening frame and pulled away midway through the set, handing Mount Aloysius a 25-15 loss despite the Mounties battling through several long rallies.
Set 2:
The second set proved to be the toughest for Mount Aloysius offensively. Geneva again controlled the net and capitalized on Mountie errors to extend its lead. Mount Aloysius struggled to find rhythm, and Geneva closed out the set 25-12 to take a 2-0 match advantage.
Set 3:
Mount Aloysius showed its best stretch of volleyball in the third set, generating more consistent offense and defensive stops. Sophomore Brady Diegelman (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler Area) led the way with several key kills as the Mounties stayed competitive early. Geneva, however, remained composed down the stretch and used a late run to seal the set 25-16 and complete the sweep.
Despite the loss, Diegelman turned in his strongest performance so far as a Mountie. Diegelman led Mount Aloysius with nine kills, added a block, and chipped in five digs in an all-around effort that stood out offensively and defensively. Lone freshman Bryson Brooks (Martinsburg, Pa., Central) followed with four kills, while senior Jason Freed (East Aurora, N.Y., East Aurora) added two kills and a block.
Senior setter Connor O'Mealia (Rochester, N.Y., Churchville) paced the offense with 17 assists and also contributed two service aces, while sophomore Zach Rosenwald (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) led the Mounties defensively with eight digs. As a team, Mount Aloysius totaled 20 kills and 27 digs while continuing to look for consistency against a solid Geneva squad.
