Wayne, N.J. - Mount Aloysius baseball opened the 2026 season with a non-conference doubleheader on the road against William Paterson, dropping a pair of tightly contested games despite strong pitching performances and defensive effort throughout the day.
In the opener, William Paterson used an early three-run homerun to set the tone and went on to earn a 6-0 victory. The Mounties settled in after the opening frame, limiting the Pioneers to three runs over the final eight innings.
The Mounties collected five hits in the game, with Sidric Grove (Clearville, Pa., Everett), Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa., Harmony), Tyler Alexander (Portage, Pa., Portage), and Logan Quade (Mechanicsville, Md., Chopticon) contributing at the plate.Â
Jacob Smith (Leechburg, Pa., Kiski ) received the ball on opening day, working 5.2 innings before turning the ball over to Scott Ranallo (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Hills), who finished the game in relief.
Despite the shutout, the Mounties stayed within reach through the middle innings, as William Paterson did not score again until the fifth.
Game two proved to be a pitcher's duel, with Mount Aloysius falling 3-0 in a tightly played contest. The Mounties limited William Paterson to just five hits, but the Pioneers capitalized on scoring opportunities with single runs in the first, sixth, and seventh innings.
Troy Misiura (Coalport, Pa., Glendale) got the start and turned in a strong outing, allowing just one run over 3.2 innings while striking out three. Connor Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Hills) followed with 2.2 innings of relief, and Dawson Wetherald (Newburg, Md., Saint Mary's Ryken) closed the game with 1.2 scoreless innings to keep the Mounties within striking distance.
Offensively, Mount Aloysius recorded just four hits. The Mounties had multiple opportunities to generate offense but were unable to break through against William Paterson pitching that didn't allow a run across 18 innings today.
Baseball (0-2) is back on the diamond a week from today where they will travel to Mary Baldwin in Staunton, VA. The Mounties will play a DH versus the Fighting Squirrels on Saturday and wrap up the weekend roadtrip with a single 9-inning game on Sunday. First pitch on both days will be at noon.
