Box Score 2 Grottoes, Va. - Baseball split a road doubleheader with Mary Baldwin on Saturday afternoon in Grottoes, Virginia, dropping the opener 6-1 before bouncing back with a 10-4 victory in game two to earn head coach
Patrick Gully his first win at the helm.
Game One
The Fighting Squirrels capitalized early in the opener, scoring twice in the first and adding two more in the second to seize control. A sacrifice fly and an error helped plate the first two runs, before a two-RBI single in the second extended the lead to 4-0.
Mount Aloysius broke through in the third inning. Freshman Coy Martino (Punxsutawney, Pa., Punxsutawney) led the inning off with a double and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from junior Liam McCarty (Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius), trimming the deficit to 4-1.
The Mounties scattered seven hits in the contest, with McCarty going 1-1 with a sac fly and walk, and Anthony Maseto added two hits of his own. However, they were unable to string together additional offense against Mary Baldwin lefty starter Lance Gowans, who went 6.2 innings to earn the win.
Trevor Hebner added a solo home run in the fifth, and an RBI single in the sixth capped the scoring for Mary Baldwin.
Senior Tanner Abrams (Pleasantville, Pa., Titusville) took the loss for the Mounties, while sophomore Connor Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Hills) provided 4.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs and striking out two.
Despite matching Mary Baldwin with seven hits, three Mountie errors proved costly in the setback.
Game Two
The Mounties responded in a big way in game two, overcoming an early 3-0 deficit to secure a split.
Freshman Tanner Pry (Butler, Pa., Butler) got the start and battled command issues early, walking five over two innings as Mary Baldwin plated three runs. Preseason Player to Watch sophomore Troy Misiura (Coalport, Pa., Glendale) entered in relief and slammed the door, tossing five strong innings while striking out eight to earn the win.
Mount Aloysius began chipping away in the third, scoring twice on a miscue in the outfield to cut the deficit to one.
The decisive blow came in the fifth inning. The Mounties put constant pressure on the Mary Baldwin defense, forcing multiple errors and taking full advantage. Sophomore Andrew Scalia (Windber, Pa., Windber ) and junior Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa., Harmony) reached as part of the rally before junior Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg) launched the first Mountie home run of the season. McDermott's blast was a three-run shot that highlighted a six-run frame and gave Mount Aloysius an 8-3 cushion.
McDermott finished with three RBIs, while sophomore Logan Quade (Mechanicsville, Md., Chopticon ) recorded two hits. In the seventh, Martino delivered again, ripping a two-run double to right field to extend the lead to 10-3.
Mary Baldwin added a late run, but Misiura remained in control to close out the victory.
The Mounties scored 10 runs on seven hits, continuously putting the ball in play and creating havoc for the Fighting Squirrels, who committed four errors in the contest.
The split moves Mount Aloysius forward with momentum, highlighted by a strong bullpen effort, timely hitting, and a milestone first victory for Gully in his debut season leading the program after taking over for athletic director and Mountie Hall of Famer Kevin Kime.
The Mounties (1-3) will look to win the three-game series versus the Fighting Squirrels (3-2) tomorrow afternoon at 12 PM.
