Mounties Battle Back to Tie Before Late Run Decides Contest

CRESSON, Pa. — The Mount Aloysius women's lacrosse team battled back to tie the game early in the fourth quarter, but visiting St. Vincent pulled away late to hand the Mounties a 14–9 loss Saturday afternoon at Kelly Field.

Mount Aloysius (2-3-1) showed resilience throughout the contest, responding to several St. Vincent scoring runs and erasing a second-half deficit to even the game before the Bearcats (4-1) closed the contest with a late surge.

The Mounties struck first in the opening quarter. Isabella Panichelle (Butler, Pa., Butler) scored at the 9:37 mark off an assist from Brenna Dobson (Lewistown, Pa., Mifflin County), and Jordan Turner (Grampian, Pa., Curwensville) followed just over a minute later with a man-up goal to give Mount Aloysius an early 2–0 lead.

St. Vincent answered with three straight goals, but the Mounties tied the game at 3–3 late in the first quarter when Chelsea Stout (Grand Blanc, Mich., Grand Blanc) scored unassisted with 1:35 remaining.

The Bearcats used a strong second quarter to take an 8–6 lead into halftime. Cassidy Cook (Glen Burnie, Md., North County) scored twice during the period for Mount Aloysius, while Shelby Smeal (Altoona, Pa., Altoona) added a goal in the final seconds before the break to keep the Mounties within two.

Mount Aloysius continued to push in the second half. Turner scored her second goal of the afternoon early in the third quarter, and Cook added a man-up goal midway through the period to cut the deficit to 9–8 heading into the final quarter.

The Mounties completed the comeback when Smeal converted a free-position opportunity with 13:19 remaining in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 9–9.

St. Vincent responded with five unanswered goals over the final 12 minutes to secure the win.

Cook led the Mounties with three goals, while Smeal and Turner each finished with two. Stout and Panichelle also added goals for Mount Aloysius.
