Myrtle Beach, SC - The Mount Aloysius baseball team dropped both games of a Sunday doubleheader to Hobart at Griffith Field in Myrtle Beach, falling 7-6 in a tight opener before the Statesmen pulled away for a 13-3 victory in game two.
The Mounties came out swinging in the first game, erupting for five runs in the opening inning. Logan Quade (Mechanicsville, Md., Chopticon ) scored the first run of the game before Andrew Scalia (Windber, Pa., Windber ), Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg), Trent Dickson (Reinholds, Pa., Cocalico ), and Tyler Alexander (Portage, Pa., Portage) each delivered RBI hits to quickly build a 5-0 advantage. Hobart responded immediately in the bottom half, scoring four runs to trim the lead to one.
The Mounties added another run in the second when McDermott singled through the left side to bring home Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa., Harmony), extending the lead to 6-4. Hobart gradually chipped away, tying the game in the fourth on a two-run single from Aidan Davenport before pushing across the go-ahead run in the sixth on a Quinn Dashefsky bunt single.
Mount Aloysius collected nine hits in the contest, led by Maseto, Scalia, and McDermott with two hits apiece. McDermott also drove in two runs and stole two bases. Caleb Palmer took the loss in relief despite allowing just one run over three innings, while Hobart's Charlie Forrest earned the win with five scoreless innings of relief.
In game two, Hobart jumped out early with three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Mount Aloysius answered in the second inning when Scalia drove in a run with a single before Liam McCarty (Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius) delivered a two-run double down the right-field line to tie the game at 3-3.
The Statesmen quickly regained control, scoring three runs in the third and adding a five-run fourth inning to break the game open. Hobart finished with 15 hits and added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth to seal the 13-3 victory.
Maseto led the Mounties offensively in the nightcap with two hits, while McCarty's double accounted for two of Mount Aloysius' three RBIs. Jacob Smith (Leechburg, Pa., Kiski ) was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs over three innings.
The Mounties finished the day with 16 hits across the doubleheader but could not keep pace with Hobart's offense, which totaled 25 hits in the two games.
With the doubleheader loss, the Mounties (5-8) will look to regroup tomorrow morning. They'll play SUNY Old Westbury (3-2) at 9 AM at Ebbets Field at the Ripken Complex.
