Greensburg, PA - Baseball delivered a strong all-around performance on Saturday, earning a much-needed doubleheader sweep over Pitt-Greensburg at Bobcat Park. The Mounties combined timely hitting and steady pitching across both games, highlighted by a big offensive day from
Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa., Harmony), a milestone first collegiate home run from
Dimitri Spagnola (West Leechburg, Pa., Kiski) in game one, and another quality start from
Trent Dickson (Reinholds, Pa., Cocalico ) in game two.
Game One: Mounties Get To Bobcat Ace Connor Burkey, Take Opener, 14-7
Mount Aloysius broke open a tight game with a massive seventh inning to power past Pitt-Greensburg, 14-7, in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader at Bobcat Park.
After falling behind 2-0 early on a Bobcat home run, the Mounties responded in the fourth inning as Trent Dickson got things started with a solo shot to left. Later in the frame, Dimitri Spagnola delivered one of the biggest swings of the day, launching his first collegiate home run which was a three-run blast to right center that to gave the Mounties a 5-2 advantage.
The Mounties continued to apply pressure in the fifth with another solo homer from Sidric Grove (Clearville, Pa., Everett), but Pitt-Greensburg answered to trim the lead to 6-4. That's when Mount Aloysius delivered the knockout blow.
In the seventh, the Mounties erupted for eight runs on a flurry of timely hitting. Anthony Maseto, who stayed red-hot at the plate, drove in a run as part of his four-hit performance, while Coy Martino (Punxsutawney, Pa., Punxsutawney) and Liam McCarty (Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius) each added RBI knocks. Lucas Edwards (Ellicott City, Md., Mount Hebron ) capped the inning with a two-run single, and the Mounties took full control at 14-4.
On the mound, Tyler Alexander (Portage, Pa., Portage) earned his first win of the season, going five innings with five strikeouts. Logan Quade (Mechanicsville, Md., Chopticon) closed things out over the final two frames.
The Mounties totaled 14 hits in the victory, with Maseto leading the way (4-for-5), while Spagnola drove in four runs in the game one victory.
Game Two: Dickson Deals as Mounties Complete Sweep, 11-6
Behind another strong outing from Dickson and a balanced offensive attack, the Mounties secured the doubleheader sweep with an 11-6 win over Pitt-Greensburg.
The Mounties wasted no time getting on the board, as Grove delivered an RBI single in the first inning. After briefly trailing 2-1, Mount Aloysius took control in the third with a four-run rally. Spagnola continued his standout day with a two-run double, and Martino followed with an RBI single to make it 5-2.
From there, the Mounties steadily added on. Maseto collected yet another RBI knock in the fourth as part of a perfect 4-for-4 performance, continuing his dominant day at the plate.
Dickson handled the rest on the mound, tossing five solid innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. He limited the Bobcats to two runs while striking out five.
The Mounties broke the game open late with three runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth. Quade and Edwards each delivered clutch RBI hits to extend the lead.
Pitt-Greensburg attempted a late rally in the ninth, but Troy Misiura (Coalport, Pa., Glendale) shut the door to earn the save and secure the sweep.
The Mounties racked up 15 hits in game two, highlighted by Maseto's four-hit game and Spagnola's three runs scored and two RBIs.
With the sweep, the Mounties move to 10-20 (4-6, AMCC) on the year. The Mounties continue conference play next week, hosting La Roche (8-18, 2-8, AMCC) on Wednesday (3 PM) before traveling to La Roche for a doubleheader next Saturday (1 & 3 PM).
