Late Rally Falls Just Short as Mounties Drop 10-9 Thriller

Cresson, PA - Mountie baseball nearly erased a late deficit but came up just short in a 10-9 non-conference loss to the Juniata College Eagles Thursday afternoon in Cresson.

The Mounties set the tone early behind a strong offensive showing from Liam McCarty (Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius). The Mounties catcher opened the scoring in the second inning with a two-run homer to left, giving the home side a 2-0 edge. He continued to pace the offense in the fourth, delivering an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.

On the mound, Connor Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Hills) kept Juniata in check through five innings, allowing just two runs while striking out six. The Mounties carried that 3-2 lead into the middle innings before the Eagles began to apply pressure against the bullpen.

After Juniata moved in front in the sixth and added another in the seventh, the Mounties answered immediately. Tyler Alexander (Portage, Pa., Portage) came through with an RBI single in the bottom half of the seventh, trimming the deficit to 5-4 and keeping momentum within reach.

The turning point came in the eighth, when the Mounties bullpen ran into trouble and Juniata capitalized with five runs to open up a 10-4 advantage. Despite the setback, Mount Aloysius continued to battle into the final frame.

The Mounties mounted an impressive ninth-inning rally, sparked by RBI singles from Dimitri Spagnola (West Leechburg, Pa., Kiski) and Alexander. With two runners on, Trent Dickson (Reinholds, Pa., Cocalico) delivered the biggest swing of the day, a three-run homer to left that cut the deficit to just one and putting the tying run within reach. Dickson's bomb was his sixth of the year, which is tied for most in the AMCC. The comeback effort ultimately fell short, but not without a fight.

Offensively, Mount Aloysius produced 14 hits, led by McCarty's 3-for-3, three-RBI performance. Dickson added two hits and three RBIs, while Alexander and Coy Martino (Punxsutawney, Pa., Punxsutawney) each recorded multi-hit games. The Mounties consistently applied pressure at the plate, scoring in four different innings and nearly completing the late comeback.

Despite a strong start from Davis, the Mounties were undone by late pitching struggles and defensive miscues, as four errors proved costly in a one-run game.

The Mounties (8-20, 2-6 AMCC) will travel to Greensburg for a doubleheader with the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats (7-14, 6-2 AMCC) on Saturday afternoon. The games will be at 1 & 3 PM at Bobcat Park in Greensburg, PA.
