CRESSON, Pa. - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team battled Penn State Abington on Saturday afternoon at Kelly Field, but ultimately fell to the Nittany Lions, 2-1.
The Mounties found themselves playing a man down for a significant portion of the contest following a red card, making the task of battling back even more difficult.
Penn State Abington struck first in the eighth minute when Frankie Rafferty found the back of the net to give the Nittany Lions an early 1-0 advantage.
Mount Aloysius responded before halftime, as Rasmus Andersson (Orebro, Sweden, Virginska Gymnasiet) scored his third goal of the season in the 38th minute. Axel Qvarnstroem (Uppsala, Sweden, Katedralskolan) and Juan Guzman (Ibague, Colombia, Colegio san Bonifacio de las Lanzas) were credited with assists on the equalizer, sending the match into halftime tied at 1-1.
The Nittany Lions regained the lead in the 65th minute when Liame Attis scored off assists from Rafferty and Rael Halim, putting Penn State Abington ahead 2-1.
Despite playing shorthanded for much of the match, the Mounties continued to battle in search of another equalizer, but Penn State Abington held on for the road victory.
With the loss, Mount Aloysius falls to 1-4-2 on the season.
The Mounties will look to rebound on Wednesday night when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on Carnegie Mellon University. The Tartans enter the matchup with a 4-1-1 record. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
