PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Men's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to Carnegie Mellon University Wednesday night at the CMU Soccer Field. The Tartans scored early and held off the Mounties the rest of the way to secure the victory.
Carnegie Mellon struck in the ninth minute when Tristan Gonzalez found the back of the net off an assist from Thomas Thornton. The early goal proved to be the difference, as neither team found the back of the net again throughout the remaining 81 minutes.
The Mounties put together several opportunities throughout the contest, finishing with eight shots, including three on goal. Gonzalo Terricabris (Catalonia, Spain, Garbi Pere Verges) and Ethan Daley (Chislehurst, England, Farringtons School) each recorded two shots, with both players putting one attempt on target. Martin Donner (Stockholm, Sweden, Danderyds Gymnasium Studievagl) also registered a shot on goal, while Aleksandr Fomin (Leander, Tex., Cedar Park) and Rasmus Andersson (Orebro, Sweden, Virginska Gymnasiet) each added a shot. Niklas Sanchez Olovson (Stockholm, Sweden, Thorildsplans Gymnasium) also recorded a shot off the bench.
Sam Denchfield (Truro, England, Loughborough College) kept the Mounties within striking distance throughout the match, making five saves over 90 minutes.
Carnegie Mellon finished with 14 shots and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks, but the Mounties' defense kept the Tartans off the scoreboard after the early goal.
The Mounties (1-5-2) are back home on Saturday afternoon for the Homecoming/Alumni game. They'll battle with the Mount Union Purple Raiders (3-3-2) at 1 p.m. at Kelly Field. This will be the first ever time the Mounties and Purple Raiders match up against each other.
