GREENSBURG, Pa. - Women's volleyball battled from start to finish Wednesday night, but the Mounties saw their eight-match winning streak come to an end in a hard-fought five-set battle against Pitt-Greensburg, falling 3-2 at Chambers Hall.
The Mounties took the first two sets before the Bobcats rallied to win the final three, with Pitt-Greensburg claiming the match by scores of 21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21 and 15-10.
Despite the loss, Mount Aloysius put together a strong overall statistical performance, finishing with more kills, assists and digs than the Bobcats. The Mounties totaled 56 kills compared to 51 for Pitt-Greensburg, while holding advantages in assists, 53-49, and digs, 91-79.
The opening set was a back-and-forth affair, but the Mounties were able to make the plays they needed down the stretch to secure a 25-21 victory and take an early 1-0 lead. Mount Aloysius followed that with another tightly contested set in the second, edging the Bobcats 25-23 to move within one set of victory.
Pitt-Greensburg responded in the third set, taking a 25-22 decision to keep the match alive. The Bobcats then carried that momentum into the fourth set, earning a 25-21 victory to force a decisive fifth set.
The Mounties and Bobcats battled once again in the final frame, but Pitt-Greensburg ultimately pulled away to take the fifth set, 15-10, and complete the comeback.
Mackenzie Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) led the Mount Aloysius attack with 16 kills, hitting .306 for the match. Jada McGill (Fishertown, Pa, Chestnut Ridge) added 10 kills, while Sarah Iman (Purgitsville, W.V., Moorefield) finished with nine and Kyler Freeman (Lucinda, Pa., North Clarion) contributed seven.
Reghyn Wilson (Harrisburg, Pa., Bishop McDevitt) paced the Mounties' offense with 28 assists, while Keira Tracy (Conifer, Colo., Conifer), who saw her first true time in a Mounties unform, added 19 assists. Madison Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) also contributed five assists.
Defensively, Madison Barr led the way with 22 digs. Ava Patton (Bellwood, Pa, Bellwood-Antis) and Tracy each added 12 digs, while the Mounties finished with 91 digs as a team.
The Mounties also received a strong serving performance from Patton, who recorded a team-high five aces. Tracy added two aces and Maya McIlwain (Rural Valley, Pa, West Shamokin) recorded one.
At the net, Jasmine Coble (Lewisberry, Pa., Red Land) led all Mount Aloysius players with five blocks, while Loren Stipanovich (Cresson, Pa, Penn Cambria) and Freeman each added two.
The loss drops Mount Aloysius to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in AMCC play, while Pitt-Greensburg improves to 4-8 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
Mount Aloysius will look to get back in the win column Saturday when it travels to Pittsburgh for an AMCC matchup against Carlow University. The Celtics enter Saturday's match at 0-11 overall and 0-3 in AMCC play.
