ALTOONA, Pa. - The Mount Aloysius College women's tennis team battled Penn State Altoona on Tuesday afternoon but fell to the Lions, 7-0, at the Adler Tennis Courts.
The Mounties, who entered the match at 1-1 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play, are now 1-2 overall and 1-2 in conference action. Penn State Altoona stays undefeated at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the AMCC.
Penn State Altoona opened the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Morgan Allen (Johnstown, Pa., Westmont Hilltop) and Lauryn Kitchen (Clearfield, PA, Clearfield) battled at No. 1 doubles before falling to Caitlin Blessel and Kasey Shuke, 6-1.
Kaylee Mento (Cresson, Pa., Penn Cambria) and Samara Scott (Claysville, Pa., Central Catholic (W.Va.) dropped their No. 2 doubles match to Abigail Morgan and Sienna Fell by a 6-1 score, while Mariah Hall (New Enterprise, Pa., Northern Bedford) and Masie Reed (Shamokin, Pa., Our Lady of Lourdes) fell at No. 3 doubles, 6-0.
The Lions continued their strong play in singles competition, winning all six matches to complete the 7-0 victory.
Kitchen provided one of the Mounties' closest battles of the afternoon at No. 2 singles. After dropping the opening set to Blessel, 6-2, Kitchen responded with a 6-1 victory in the second set to force a deciding third-set tiebreaker. Blessel ultimately prevailed, 7-4, in the tiebreaker.
Allen fell to Shuke at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, while Mento dropped her No. 3 singles match to Colaianni, 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 4 singles, Scott fell to Fell, 6-0, 6-0, while Hall dropped her No. 5 singles match to Morgan by the same score.
Reed also battled at No. 6 singles, taking Fulton to a deciding third-set tiebreaker after falling 6-3 in the first set and responding with a 6-4 second-set victory. Fulton ultimately claimed the tiebreaker, 7-4.
The Mounties will finally return home Saturday afternoon for their first home match of the season when they welcome Waynesburg to the Ray & Louise Walker Athletic Complex. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Tennis will look to get back into the win column when it takes on the Yellow Jackets in the non-conference matchup. The Mounties are 5-4 all-time against Waynesburg, including a 3-1 record at home, although the Yellow Jackets have won the last two meetings.
